In 2003, Peer Mentor.net was consulted to enhance the relationship between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education for the province of British Columbia. The following goals were established:
- to prepare the province with a common set of strategies for the upcoming Winter Olympics 2010;
- to determine what health related issues should be at the forefront of a campaign to improve the overall health of B.C. residents;
- to set and act on realistic goals for both ministries; and
- to develop mentor strategies that would enhance communication between support groups and government agencies.
Coach and Mentor Training
Coaching by one definition is when one person, usually of a higher position of authority and / or experience, assists another to develop a specific skill set. Typically the focus is on a specific skill set. There are many variations to this definition because it does not include all the possibilities of coaching. Also, to be an effective coach one often needs the skills of that of an effective mentor and vice versa.
Mentoring by definition is when one person, usually (but not exclusively) of a higher position of authority and / or experience, assists another to develop a range of personal assets (ie. communication skills, management skills, leadership skills, what skills are needed to be vertically mobile, etc.)
When you look at these two definitions there really isn't much difference. David Glutterbuck, in the United Kingdom, Dr. Rey Carr, from Peer Resources in Victoria British Columbia, and Coachville University from California United States, all talk about Coaching and Mentoring as being almost synonymous terms.
We offer training in mentoring and coaching based on a company's needs. We will customize the training to fit the work setting. We will employ David CooperriderÕs ÒChange ModelÓ (the best of what was, is, should be, and will be) to develop a process for change that is respectful of the employer and employee. We will use D.A.T.A. (Directed Active Training Approach) as the basic framework for training.
